19th Congress of KKE

Question of the ΚΚΕ Delegation in the European Parliament regarding the new persecution against young communists in Serbia

The MEP of the KKE, Sotiris Zarianopoulos, denounced the persecution against the Communist Youth of Yugoslavia (SKOJ), the youth organization of the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ), with a question to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, F. Mogherini. The MEP of the KKE stressed the following in his question:

"There is an increase in the persecution of young communists in Serbia, members of the Communist Youth of Yugoslavia (SKOJ), the youth organization of the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ).

On the 23rd of February, at a lecture given by M.Davenport, head of the EU delegation in Serbia, at the University of Belgrade, two members of the SKOJ criticized the EU and the plans of the country's government to adapt the education system to the EU directions. The security personnel of the university violently removed them and handed them over to the police who arrested them.

On the 11th of February, at an event in Belgrade on the topic "US foreign policy and the role of the USA in international developments", members of the NKPJ and the SKOJ intervened wearing t-shirts emblazoned with  "USA out" and shouting slogans concerning the NATO crimes in Yugoslavia in 1999 and the thousands of deaths caused by it. The security personnel attacked them and handed them over to the police.

Over the last year members of the SKOJ have been attacked several times by fascist gangs like "Serbian Action". The target of one of these attacks was the 1st Secretary of SKOJ, Aleksandar Denic, who indeed was arrested because he defended himself and was dragged through the courts.

The High Representative is asked:

What position does the Commission take as regards the state terror and repression and the anti-communist persecution against cadres of the SKOJ and as regards the demand for the free and unimpeded political and mass activity of the communists and labour-people's movement?"
