On 13 October, student unions in Athens held a mass demonstration outside the Greek Parliament to protest against the state’s failure to supportthe students, given the lack of adequate university dormitories and the exorbitant cost of rent in cities; Students, like working-class families, are suffering from high costs of energy and basic food items and are finding it difficultto concentrate on their studies.
The students symbolically set up dozens of tents and unfurled a giant banner outside the Parliament building with the slogan “Should we study or should we survive?” demanding that the government take immediate measures to support student housing and cover the cost of studying.
Furthermore, the students effectively thwarted the government’s attempts at repression, which had deployed riot and regular police.
The protests will continue in the coming days.
